Cosmetic Surgery Gone Wrong

Posted on Dec. 17, 2005 at 11:42 AM - Post Comment

Every year thousands of people have cosmetic surgery. Most are seeking to correct imperfections or update their looks. Unfortunately, some things don't always go as planned and we are seeing an increasing number of problems associated with these procedures.

After a breast-reduction operation, Eliza was in constant pain due to a gaping hole inside her left breast. She suffered what is called "wound breakdown". The area had to be dressed daily and took five months to heal. She has managed to recover, but is physically and emotionally scarred by the experience.

Plastic surgeon, Dr Darryl Hodgkinson, says he spends nearly 70% of his time operating on patients who are dissatisfied with previous cosmetic surgery. Sometimes unskilled surgeons are to blame. It is often assumed that these operations are very simple when in fact they're actually exceptionally complicated.

Phrases like "lunchtime lift" and promises of "no bruising" and "no swelling" can also be unrealistic. Operations involve bruising, time off work and healing. There is a lot of commitment the patient needs to make in order to get good results.

Lawyer Kathryn Booth knows all about the risks. She acts on behalf of patients who've had things go wrong - like one woman who ended up with serious burns after a laser resurfacing procedure. She says that at the end of the day it is the doctor's duty to ensure the patient understands the risks of all procedures.

So how do you know who's the best surgeon for you? Some suggestions:
* Ask how many years of experience your doctor has.
* Ask about the doctor's qualifications and training.
* Find out how many cases the doctor does every year.
* Ask to look at before and after pictures of their work (more than 1).
* Talk to other patients who've had the same surgery.
* Look to organisations such as the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Australian Society of Cosmetic Laser Surgeons for advice.
* Determine what sort of cover you have or should have.
