Mar. 15, 2006 - Colt McCoy No. 1 QB heading into Texas spring practice

AUSTIN (AP) - Texas redshirt freshman Colt McCoy is the No. 1 quarterback heading into spring practice, but freshman Jevan Snead will have a chance to compete for the job before the 2006 season opener, coach Mack Brown said Thursday.

The Longhorns return most of their starters from last season's national championship team but not quarterback Vince Young, who left school after his junior season to enter the NFL draft. Spring drills start Monday.

Naming McCoy the No. 1 quarterback is no surprise. He signed with Texas in 2005 and redshirted last season, running the scout team and taking some practice snaps with the second team as Texas went 13-0 and beat Southern Cal 41-38 in the Rose Bowl.

Snead, one of the Longhorns' top recruits this year, graduated from Stephenville High School in December and enrolled at Texas in January in order to practice this spring. He traveled with the Longhorns to the White House earlier this month to meet President Bush.

They are the only two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster.

"It would be unfair to throw Jevan out there immediately because he's only been in school a month. We do want him to be able to relax," Brown said. "Jevan's never taken a snap here. Colt's been here six months."

Texas closes practice to the media and fans until spring drills conclude with a scrimmage April 1. The Longhorns open the 2006 season at home Sept. 2 against North Texas.

"We'll have the inexperience at quarterback, but we think the talent is there," Brown said.

Texas is riding a 20-game winning streak and likely would have been the consensus preseason No. 1 had Young stayed for another season. Instead, Texas must groom its two young quarterbacks to be ready to play earlier than expected.

Young's departure left a huge hole in the offense. He was 30-2 as a starter and was the Texas career leader in total offense (9,167 yards), touchdowns (81) and rushing touchdowns by a quarterback (37).

He also had the intangible leadership qualities and knack for making the big play.

Brown said McCoy and Snead must learn how to manage a game before worrying about how to win one.

"Don't you think you'll be the guy to just walk out there and run down the field and kill everybody," Brown said. "That's not the way it happens. Play within the system. Be smart."

Feb. 28, 2006 - Fort Worth Christian girls basketball coach John Anderson had a fear this season that few coaches ever experience. His players were getting too unselfish. If everybody is looking to dish the assist pass, there’s nobody to finish. Having too many self

Texas keeps rolling at home and inching closer to its first Big 12 title in seven years.

LaMarcus Aldridge scored 18 points on near-perfect shooting, and a stellar defensive effort on Kansas' Brandon Rush sent the No. 7 Longhorns to an 80-55 win Saturday night, pushing the No. 16 Jayhawks a game back in the chase for the conference title.

Aldridge hit his first eight shots, not missing until Texas had a 20-point lead late in the second half. He finished 9-of-10 from the floor, grabbed eight rebounds and had four blocks.

P.J. Tucker added 19 points and eight boards for the Longhorns (24-4, 12-2), who tied a school record for the most wins in a regular season.

The Longhorns also got 20 points off the bench, 12 from freshman point guard A.J. Abrams, to stay undefeated at home in conference play. Texas shot 55 percent and outrebouned Kansas 36-19 to snap the Jayhawks' 10-game winning streak

"We got a terrific effort from everyone," Texas coach Rick Barnes said. "But we know we've got another week left in the regular season."

Texas hasn't won the Big 12 since 1999, Barnes' first season in Austin.

Feb. 16, 2006 - Cowboy Troy Teams With Texas Longhorns

University of Texas graduate Cowboy Troy has written and recorded a song for his alma-mater and National Championship Texas Longhorns called, what else but, "Hook 'Em Horns," available for purchase digitally starting this week.

The originator of "Hick Hop" wrote the song with his friends and oftentimes collaborators Big Kenny and John Rich of the Grammy nominated duo Big & Rich.

"I hear that Coach Brown has heard the song and likes it," says Troy. "They tell me he's been playing it for the team since we sent it to him and that's really who we wrote the song for but hopefully other alums and fans of UT will want to crank it up for the Horns!"

A clip of the song is also available as a ringtone exclusively to Cingular Wireless subscribers. Fans can download the tone via their Cingular Wireless handsets or text HOOK to 386. For more information visit CingularSounds.com. The tone will be available to all other wireless carriers on March 7.

Feb. 1, 2006 - Men

For the second straight year, the Lenoir-Rhyne College Men´s Basketball Team traveled to Austin, Texas, to take on the University of Texas.  The Longhorns´ mentor, Rick Barnes, was a 1977 graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College.  Texas came into the contest ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press NCAA Division I Preseason Poll and a contender for the national title.  Although the Bears fell to the Longhorns, 97-36, the experience of the trip, of course, will never be forgotten.

Todd Lawing, Lenoir-Rhyne´s Assistant Director of Athletics and Director of NCAA Compliance and Facilities, took the following pictures on the trip.
